Environment First Brief

This page tells you what you, as someone involved in Environment First, need or ought to know beyond public knowledge of this organisation. Please also note that the information available here is not all there is, it is simply what would be known to the ranks available at game start. As you progress in the organisation, more information may become available. Alternatively, you may come across things while investigating.

Whether you decide to share this information with others is up to you. However, the GMs ask that you relay this information in your own words instead of simply showing others the organisation brief, to maintain a sense of IC authenticity.

The GM in charge of this organisation is Elynor. If you have any questions related to this organisation, feel free to get in touch with her.

History

Once, there were three friends. They lived in a forest, spending their days communing with nature (for animals and plants have all sorts of interesting things to say if you know how to listen); and their nights staring up at the stars. Born of trees themselves, they were content. The winters would come, and they would wither. But spring would come again.

Or so they thought. Good things rarely last, and this was no exception. Man had found medicinal plants in the forest, and, much to their surprise, hunks of metal they found valuable. Word spread, and soon the skies were full of smoke, the trees were killed one by one for their wood, and the earth was dug up, preventing the forest from ever being able to truly regrow. The friends also began to die, for their lives were connected to the life of the forest. But it was more than a physical death they felt approaching as they stared into the barren sky.

In the end, two succumbed. The last remained, uprooting one of the final young saplings miraculously missed by the men and their machines. Alone, they set out to see the world, cradling the infant tree. What they saw was horrifying. Nature had been stripped away, relegated to corners and afterthoughts - anywhere that wasn't too inconvenient. But there were some who would hear the lone friend's message. Some had already taken up the cause, but others became more sympathetic in time. Many dismissed the message as defunct in this modern world. But Environment First had begun to take root.

At last, exhausted but no longer alone, the friend planted the young tree and settled. The message was out there. The organisation was out of their hands, taken by those more able to spread the word.

Around twenty years have passed since then. Some of Environment First's actions since then have been considered radical: sabotaging factories, pouring toxic waste onto those who originally created it, etc. Officially, activities like this are frowned upon. Most members manage to keep their activities legal, and get their point across through shouting, protesting, and encouraging others to do the same, before it's too late.

Other People of Note

Elm

The founder of Environment First whose followers took to calling them Elm. A creation of nature whose life is linked to the small part of the forest they were originally born in, Elm's current whereabouts are tied strongly to the small bit of forest they managed to recover. Having planted the final tree around ten years ago, none but the higest ranking members of Environment First know where they can currently be found; although they occasionally send sparrows to deliver messages to those fighting for the cause under Environment First's banner.

Captain Birch

Twenty years ago, Captain Birch - a teenager at the time - heard Elm speak. Able to control and nurture plants for as long as she could remember, Captain Birch felt inspired by the words and the story, and soon became Environment First's greatest asset and official leader, steering companies away from patches of nature, saving several endangered species, and inspiring many to follow in her footsteps with her tales of horror: a world without nature, crumbling into polluted nothingness.

Hemlock

A more extreme member of Environment First, Hemlock has yet to be officially tied to any of the crimes many members suspect are his fault. He is usually seen shouting at pedestrians.

Mangrove

A relatively new recruit, Mangrove is a part-time environmental activist, part-time caterer. Indeed, his work in the catering business pulled him into a flash-protest by Environment First. More of a listener than a shouter, he spends most of his time making sure the members around him are well fed while they spread the word.

Location Information

Sebold Reserve

A nature reserve in the Edge of Capital City, and the closest thing to a true headquarters. Members usually meet here to discuss plans and upcoming protests. Whenever present, members are careful to influence their surroundings as little as possible, treating nature with respect, and hounding any litterers who don't take quite as much effort to care.

The Bucket

Named for its shape, the Bucket is a squat, circular building in Capital City and the unofficial name for the official address for Environment First. Although usually empty, you can usually see a few members around trying to keep everything running smoothly.

What we Really Think

SPEAR

They could care a lot more about some of the other crimes going on out there.

Garuda

One has to wonder how much they've inadvertedly destroyed in an attempt to do good.

The Rothwell Science Park

For a park, they aren't contributing very much to nature.

Gamasot & JeevesCorp

We've seen the statistics, and they aren't green.

Recent Events

World Crisis

With that part of the Moon gone, there's flooding, the tides are a horrible mess, and destruction is everywhere, despite SPEAR's attempts to send their supers to deal with it. People are looting, fires are burning, and Environment First has been presented with a golden opportunity in the worst possible way to do some good and show the world we want what's best. Captain Birch has been flying to as many places as she can in an attempt to help anyone and everyone, but she can't be everywhere at once. All members are encouraged to do everything they can to stop the chaos.

Pyromaniac

A pyromaniac has been at work in the Edge of Capital City. Now they've moved away from mostly abandoned buildings and towards the nature reserves. Even if the world is in chaos, it's not right to let this criminal get away with this. An Environment First sponsor has promised a reward for anyone who can find and capture the pyromaniac.
